Children whose Behaviour Indicates a Lack of Parental Control

When children are brought to the attention of the police or wider community because of their behaviour, this may be an indication of vulnerability, poor supervision or neglect. Consideration should be given to whether they are children in need and services offered that reflect their needs.

Actions that could be taken in response to a lack of parental control:

  • Child Safety Order – provides help for the child to improve their behaviour
  • Parenting Order – requirement for parent to attend counselling or guidance sessions e.g. parenting support classes
  • Parenting contracts and home-school agreements
  • Provision of support to parents/carers
  • Provision of support/diversion for the child
