What Happens if a Criminal Offence may have been Committed?

On receipt of a referral, Children’s Social Care must immediately notify the Police whenever it is suspected that a criminal offence may have been committed. In dealing with alleged offences the Police will work in partnership with the other agencies involved. The responsibility to instigate a criminal investigation rests with the Police but there may be cases where, after discussion, it is agreed that the best interests of the child are served by intervention led by Children’s Social Care rather than a full police investigation.
